One simple way to do this is through a technique called “mirroring.” This technique involves observing how people respond to the same questions or statements you make and using that information to gauge how they perceive you. Let me illustrate this with a personal anecdote.

Conversations

Recently, I was conversing with a colleague, and we started talking about cars. I asked him if he had bought a new car recently, to which he responded with a confident “Yes.” and included other details describing his excitement about it. Then, he asked me the same question, and I replied, “I am thinking of buying one.” His response to my statement was crucial. He paused momentarily and then asked, “What kind of car are you thinking of buying?”

This seemingly innocuous question was actually revealing. His response showed that he was interested in my answer and considered my opinion important. It was a positive reflection of how he perceived me as a person.

On the other hand, if his response had been dismissive or uninterested, it could have indicated a negative perception of me. Perhaps he saw me as someone who lacked knowledge or credibility in this area.

The mirroring technique can be used in various situations, not just in conversations about cars. It involves paying close attention to people’s responses to your statements, questions, and opinions. Based on their reactions, you can gauge how they perceive you and adjust your communication style accordingly.

For example, if someone responds positively to your ideas, you can assume they perceive you as knowledgeable or creative. Conversely, if someone seems disinterested or dismissive, you may need to work on your communication skills or rethink your approach.

Doubt or conjectures

Sharp yet smooth

People’s responses to your questions can reveal a lot about the mental image they carry of you. For example, if you ask someone about a topic they know well, and they respond with a ton of obvious details, it could indicate that they think you are not well-versed in that topic and are not research-oriented.

Similarly, if someone responds to your statement with scepticism or disagreement, it could indicate that they perceive you as someone who lacks credibility or expertise in that area.

On the other hand, if someone responds positively and enthusiastically to your ideas, it could indicate that they see you as knowledgeable, creative, and credible. They may be more willing to listen to your opinions and consider your ideas seriously.

It’s important to note that people’s perceptions of us can be influenced by many factors, including our communication style, body language, and past interactions. However, paying attention to people’s responses can give us valuable insights into how we are perceived and help us make adjustments as needed.
