Incompetence is not usually about lack of skills, its more about the lack of will to try or deep dive. And low confidence and self esteem are yields of that very issue.

(More to come: Famous personalities teach us about overcoming incompetence)

Incompetence, often seen as the inability to perform a task adequately, is a concept that resonates with most of us.

We’ve all experienced moments when we felt out of our depth, unsure of our abilities, or simply paralyzed by a lack of confidence.

Our lives have been plagued by incompetence in everything we do. And we have been playing the game wrong all along.

Let's first understand what incompetence actually is.

What if incompetence is not merely a lack of skill or knowledge?

What if it’s a psychological quagmire that goes much deeper than what meets the eye?

In this article, we’ll delve into the intricate psychology of incompetence and explore how it can be more about the absence of willpower and self-esteem than the absence of skill.

The Roots of Incompetence

Incompetence often conceals a complex interplay of emotions and psychological factors.

While it may seem like a straightforward issue of lacking the necessary skills, it frequently has deeper roots.

1. Lack of Willingness to Try

At its core, incompetence can be linked to a lack of willingness to try or to venture out of one’s comfort zone.

This reluctance to step into the unknown is often rooted in fear — fear of failure, fear of judgment, or even fear of success.

People may avoid trying because they are afraid of what it would mean for their self-esteem if they were to fail. Thus, incompetence, in many cases, is more about a psychological barrier than an actual lack of skill.

2. Low Confidence and Self-Esteem

The connection between incompetence and low confidence or self-esteem is a critical one. When individuals consistently shy away from challenges or avoid trying new things, it erodes their self-confidence.

Over time, they start to believe that they are incapable, leading to a self-fulfilling prophecy of incompetence.

Incompetence becomes a self-perpetuating cycle where low confidence breeds a lack of motivation to try, which further undermines self-esteem.

3. The Role of Stress

Stress is often a silent partner in the realm of incompetence. Contrary to popular belief, stress is not always a result of overexertion or an excessive workload.

Instead, it can arise from the frustration and anxiety stemming from indecision.

When people are unsure of their abilities or lack the motivation to act, the indecision itself can become a significant source of stress.

Overcoming incompetence

The key to addressing incompetence lies not only in building skills but also in addressing the underlying psychological factors.

Here are some strategies to overcome the psychological barriers associated with incompetence, by famous people we already know and love:

  1. Self-Reflection:

“If you are miserable in someone’s company, it may be because of them. But if you feel miserable when you are alone, you are obviously in bad company. This one thing you must fix that you are not the issue is in your life.”

— Sadhguru

Take time to introspect and identify the fears and insecurities that may be holding you back. Spend a lot of time alone!

Understanding the root causes of your reluctance can be the first step toward addressing them.

2. Setting Realistic Goals:

“Set your goals so that you’re comfortable with your pursuit, so that it doesn’t undermine your integrity, so that it’s a goal that’s worth living with, and then maybe it will be a goal that’s worth accomplishing.”

— Jordon Peterson

Start small and set achievable goals that gradually stretch your abilities. Success in these smaller tasks can boost your confidence and motivation to tackle more significant challenges.

3. Embrace Failure:

Understand that failure is not a reflection of your worth as a person. It’s a stepping stone to growth and improvement.

Embrace failure as a teacher rather than a condemner.

4. Seek Support:

“If I have seen further, it is by standing on the shoulders of giants.”

— Isaac Newton

Don’t hesitate to seek guidance and support from mentors, friends, or professionals. They can provide valuable insights, encouragement, and perspective.

5. Practice Decision-Making:

“The most important quality for an investor is temperament, not intellect. You need a temperament that neither derives great pleasure from being with the crowd or against the crowd.”

— Warren Buffett

When faced with a choice or challenge, make a conscious decision to act. The act of making a decision, regardless of the outcome, can alleviate the stress associated with indecision.

Incompetence is a psychological labyrinth that often conceals itself as a lack of skill or knowledge.

However, by recognizing that it’s more about the absence of willpower and self-esteem, we can begin to dismantle its grip on our lives.

Addressing the roots of incompetence, such as fear and low self-esteem, and practising the art of decision-making can empower us to break free from the cycle of incompetence and lead more confident, fulfilling lives.

Remember, true competence begins within the mind, and with the right mindset, we can conquer any challenge that comes our way.

Go Tiger!
