How boring days allow us to leverage the power of consistency

Life is just a room we are in, filled with people and things we surround ourselves with. To needlessly gyrate and fall victims to our subconscious desires is like running on a hamster wheel and still hoping you would get somewhere. Contrarily, monotony and boring routines are the fundamental core to anyone’s progress. Needless to say, big names in the sports industry focus on just those two things for years to come. It sure does sound like stagnation, but that is a way for our brain to function and grow linearly. And growth implies progress, as far as us corporate humans are concerned. You are not into sports you would say, but I would argue that your brain is in a constant tussle with itself. No matter what you do, it’s your mind against your mind, and the only thing that will help you keep yourself grounded is your boring routine and a bag of habits.

Courage to be boring, accepting a monotonous routine and internalizing the fact that you are your routine, and what you feed yourself — both mentally and physically, is what will give you immense pleasure in life. This does transform you in a magical way, it allows you to take a back seat and let the routine drive the majority of your life. Sure, there are phases of inception, where you are the primary driver who is trying to instil those habits, routines and mindsets. However, most of your life will be carried forward by your subconscious mind, in other words, your habits. It makes excellent sense to use an analogy here to concretise what I am trying to say by quoting Dr Jordon B. Peterson’s casual yet intriguing comment on what life is:

Your life isn’t margaritas on a beach in Jamaica. That happens now and then. Those are exceptions. Your life is how your wife greets you at the door when you come home every day, ’cause that’s like 10 minutes a day. Your life is how you treat each other over the breakfast table, ’cause that’s an hour and a half or an hour every single day. You get those mundane things those things you do every day. You concentrate. on them and you make them pristine. it’s li you got 80% of your life put together. These little things that are right in front of us, they’re not little.”

One of the many advantages of choosing to embrace a routine is that it allows you to make decisions with conviction. As you are always living by your habits, the answer to something that you want to do or you came across in life becomes either a “heck yes!” or a “hell no!”, and that by itself is more powerful. Spending your time on this earth fighting your own indecisions is far less exciting than having clear opinions about every little thing that will help you make decisions with ease.
